Air India Dreamliner declares fuel emergency and diverts safely to Heathrow
An Air India Boeing 787 Dreamliner travelling from India to the UK declared an in flight emergency over low fuel before diverting safely to London Heathrow after severe winter weather forced the closure of Birmingham Airport.

The aircraft, a Boeing 787 8 operating Flight AI117 from Amritsar to Birmingham, declared a general emergency on the evening of 8 January 2026 after extended holding caused fuel levels to fall toward critical limits. The flight was ultimately diverted to London Heathrow Airport, where it landed without incident.

According to airline and flight tracking data, the aircraft, registered VT NAC, was approaching Birmingham as Storm Goretti brought heavy snowfall and sharply reduced visibility. Airport authorities temporarily suspended runway operations after visibility dropped below the minimum required for a safe landing.
The flight crew aborted its initial approach and entered a holding pattern while conditions were reassessed. As time in the air increased, remaining fuel reserves became a concern.
With fuel levels approaching emergency thresholds, the pilots transmitted Squawk 7700, the universal aviation transponder code used to signal a serious situation requiring immediate priority from air traffic control. The declaration indicated a general emergency related to fuel following prolonged holding.

UK air traffic controllers coordinated a diversion to Heathrow, selected for its longer runways and advanced Category III Instrument Landing System, which allows aircraft to land safely in very low visibility.

The Dreamliner touched down on runway 09L and taxied to gate B49. There were no reports of injuries to passengers or crew.
Air India said the diversion followed standard safety procedures as weather conditions continued to disrupt operations at Birmingham Airport, where snowfall led to runway closures throughout the evening.
A Squawk 7700 alert does not necessarily indicate a mechanical failure or catastrophic event. Aviation experts note it is used to ensure priority handling when a flight faces a critical situation. In this case, the declaration was driven by fuel management concerns after weather related delays prevented a timely landing.
Airport officials said safety remained the overriding priority as winter conditions continued to affect flights across the region.
