Ex Army Veteran Found Dead in Flat as Police Arrest 49 Year Old in Murder Probe
Police have named the Ex Army man found dead in a flat in Leicestershire as a murder investigation enters its next phase.

Leicestershire Police said officers were called at 11.46am on Tuesday to a property in George Toon Court, off Brook Street in Syston, after reports of concern for a man inside. A 49 year old man was found unresponsive and was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics.
The victim has now been formally identified as Simon Geary, 49. Detectives believe he was assaulted inside the flat.
A 49 year old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder and remains in police custody. Officers have confirmed that the two men were known to each other and have said they are not currently looking for anyone else in connection with the death.

In a statement released through police on Wednesday, Mr Geary’s family paid tribute to him, describing him as a “kind, caring soul”.
“Simon was a much loved son and brother,” the statement said. “The support he gave our family will never be forgotten. He was a kind, caring soul who served his country in the Army and we are so proud of what he achieved in his career. We ask the public to respect our privacy at this very difficult time.”

Detectives are continuing to carry out extensive enquiries, including speaking to residents in the area and reviewing CCTV footage to trace Mr Geary’s movements before his death. A cordon remains in place at the scene while forensic officers and specialist teams examine the flat.
Detective Inspector Kevin Hames, the senior investigating officer, said officers would remain in the area over the coming days as enquiries continue.

“A team of detectives from the major crime team, supported by specialist resources and neighbourhood officers, are working to establish exactly what happened,” he said. “We believe the incident took place inside the flat sometime on Tuesday morning.
“Although many people will be spending time with loved ones over the coming days, I would urge anyone who saw or heard anything, or who has information that could assist our investigation, to come forward.”
Police have asked anyone with relevant information to contact Leicestershire Police as the investigation continues.
