The 32, year old son of Caroline Kennedy, the U.S. ambassador to Australia, and designer Edwin Schlossberg, declared his candidacy in a video released Tuesday night, confirming that he intends to succeed Democratic Rep. Jerry Nadler, who announced his retirement in September.

“I’m running for Congress to represent my home New York’s 12th congressional district where I was born and raised, where I took the bus to school every single day from one side of the district to the other,” Schlossberg said in his announcement.
“This is the best part of the greatest city on Earth.”

A continuation of the Kennedy legacy

True to his family’s Democratic roots, Schlossberg has positioned himself as a progressive voice who plans to campaign on combating Trump era policies and defending democratic institutions.

His bid for office comes as Democrats seek to retain control of key urban districts ahead of the 2026 midterms.

Sharp critic of Trump and RFK Jr.

Schlossberg has gained attention for his outspoken political views and distinctive online presence, where he frequently takes aim at Republicans, Donald Trump, and even members of his own extended family.

He has been a fierce critic of Robert F. Kennedy Jr., his first cousin once removed and a longtime anti vaccine activist, who is running for president as an independent.

“He’s trading in on Camelot, celebrity, conspiracy theories, and conflict for personal gain and fame,” Schlossberg said in 2023 after RFK Jr. refused to endorse President Joe Biden’s re, election campaign.

Background and education

Schlossberg studied history at Yale University before earning both a law degree and a Master of Business Administration from Harvard University.

In July 2024, he joined Vogue as a political correspondent covering the U.S. presidential election, where his commentary drew praise for its clarity and wit.

Though new to electoral politics, Schlossberg’s education and Kennedy family legacy have already made him one of the most closely watched young Democrats in the country.

Focus on New York’s 12th district

The 12th congressional district spans the geographical heart of Manhattan, covering Central Park, the Upper East Side, Midtown, and areas stretching from Greenwich Village to Harlem.

Schlossberg said his campaign would focus on issues that reflect the energy and creativity of the city he calls home.

“We have the best hospitals and schools, restaurants and museums,” he said. “This is the financial and media capital of the world. This district should have a representative who can harness that creativity, energy and drive and translate it into political power in Washington.”

If elected, Schlossberg would become the first member of the Kennedy family to hold elected office in nearly a decade, reviving the Camelot legacy that once defined a generation of Democratic leadership.
