Valve’s surprise return to dedicated gaming hardware has reignited interest in the Steam Machine, a revived PC console hybrid positioned between traditional consoles and full desktop PCs. With early details now emerging, here is a complete breakdown of the expected release timing, hardware specifications, pricing rumours and how the Steam Machine fits into the wider gaming landscape.

When will the Steam Machine be released?

Valve has said it is aiming to launch the Steam Machine in early 2026. While no exact date has been confirmed, industry watchers generally interpret this as a window stretching into the first quarter of the year, potentially up to April.

That timeline could be affected by wider market pressures, particularly the ongoing global shortage of memory chips. AI data centres are absorbing vast quantities of DRAM and NAND, driving prices sharply higher. Some manufacturers, including Micron, have begun shifting focus away from consumer hardware towards enterprise customers.

Valve has previously stated that it wants the Steam Machine to be priced competitively with entry level PCs. With component costs rising, the company may be reassessing how and when to bring the device to market, potentially relying on its substantial Steam software revenue to absorb some of the pressure.

Can you pre order the Steam Machine?

Pre orders are not currently available. However, users can add the Steam Machine to their wishlist on Steam to receive notifications once sales open.

Valve has not confirmed whether it will use a reservation system similar to the one employed during the launch of the Steam Deck, which required a small deposit and placed buyers in a queue. Given Valve’s increased experience with hardware launches, it is possible the company will manufacture enough units for a more conventional release.

Is the Steam Machine a PC or a console?

The Steam Machine sits firmly between the two. Like the Steam Deck, it runs SteamOS, a custom operating system based on Arch Linux. When powered on, it presents as a console style interface designed for controller use, but users can switch to a full desktop environment at any time.

This flexibility allows players to install non Steam launchers, productivity software or other applications, just as they would on a PC. At the same time, those who prefer a console like experience can remain entirely within Steam’s interface.

With a bundled controller and living room friendly design, the Steam Machine can sit under a television or function as a compact desktop PC with a mouse and keyboard.

Steam Machine hardware specifications

Unlike consoles, the Steam Machine does not use unified memory. Instead, it separates system and graphics memory, which has implications for modern games that rely heavily on large texture assets.

The confirmed specifications are as follows:

  • CPU: Semi custom AMD Zen 4, 6 cores and 12 threads, up to 4.8GHz, 30W TDP
  • GPU: Semi custom AMD RDNA3 with 28 compute units, up to 2.45GHz sustained clock, 110W TDP
  • Memory: 16GB DDR5 system memory plus 8GB GDDR6 video memory
  • Storage: 512GB or 2TB NVMe SSD, both with high speed microSD expansion
  • Power: Internal power supply, 110 to 240V AC

The hardware should handle esports titles such as Counter Strike 2 with ease. More demanding games built on engines like Unreal Engine 5 may require reduced settings due to video memory limits, something unified memory consoles can handle more flexibly.

Does it include a controller?

Yes. The Steam Machine ships with a bundled Steam Controller. The design mirrors the Steam Deck’s controls but without a screen, featuring standard buttons and sticks alongside dual trackpads, rear buttons and a built in gyroscope.

The trackpads allow for mouse like precision and make traditionally PC focused genres, such as strategy games, more practical from a sofa. Valve has also confirmed the controller will be sold separately for those who want to use it with other systems.

Steam Machine pricing rumours

Valve has not announced official pricing. However, potential figures surfaced after listings were found in the source code of the Czech retailer Smarty, which is believed to be an authorised Valve seller.

The leaked prices suggested:

  • 512GB model: 19,826 CZK, roughly $950
  • 2TB model: 22,306 CZK, roughly $1,070

Smarty is said to add a markup of around 17 percent, which would place Valve’s direct pricing closer to $814 and $916 respectively. The retailer itself did not display these prices publicly, and they may represent internal estimates rather than final figures.

For context, even premium versions of the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X remain under $800, while base models retail for significantly less. Valve’s own Steam Deck OLED sells for $649 directly, though third party listings often cost far more.

Why prices may keep rising

Even if the leaked figures prove inaccurate, few analysts expect the Steam Machine to be inexpensive. The global memory shortage is pushing up costs across the technology sector, from smartphones to laptops and consoles.

At CES 2026, Samsung executives acknowledged that semiconductor supply issues are likely to drive further price increases. Industry insiders believe the so called RAM crisis may not ease until well into 2027.

As a result, whenever Valve launches the Steam Machine, its pricing is likely to reflect these pressures.

There is still no confirmed release date or official pricing for the Steam Machine or Valve’s upcoming Steam Frame VR headset. More details are expected closer to launch, and this story will be updated as soon as new information emerges.
