Matvei Rumiantsev, 22, was convicted at Snaresbrook Crown Court of assault occasioning actual bodily harm and perverting the course of justice. He was cleared of charges of rape and intentional strangulation linked to the same incident, as well as a separate allegation of rape and assault said to have occurred in November 2024.

The court heard that Mr Trump, the 19 year old son of former US president Donald Trump, called emergency services on 18 January 2025 after receiving a FaceTime call from a female friend in London.

In a transcript of the call released by the Crown Prosecution Service, Mr Trump told a police operator: “I’m calling from the US, I just got a call from a girl, she’s getting beat up.”

When asked how he knew the woman, he said he had met her on social media. At one point, the operator asked him to answer questions more clearly.

Mr Trump later provided a written account to investigators, describing what he saw as brief but alarming. He said the call was answered by a shirtless man with dark hair, before the camera turned to the woman, who was crying as she was struck.

“This whole interaction lasted five to seven seconds,” he wrote in an email to police in May 2025.

Jurors heard that Rumiantsev and the woman, who cannot be named for legal reasons, had been drinking together on the evening of 17 January and into the early hours of the following day at his flat in Canary Wharf, east London.

The prosecution said Rumiantsev assaulted the woman on 18 January, including hitting her in the face. The court heard he answered her phone during the assault and showed her on camera while she was crying and screaming.

Judge Mr Justice Bennathan KC told jurors they should not rely on Mr Trump’s account as the sole basis for a conviction, noting that he did not give evidence under oath and was not cross examined.

Prosecutor Serena Gates said Rumiantsev had been jealous of the woman’s friendship with Mr Trump, possibly because of his public profile.

During cross examination, Rumiantsev accepted he had been jealous “to some extent”, but denied attacking the woman.

“I am being portrayed as a jealous person who can lose his temper,” he told the court. “What I was unhappy about was that she was leading him on.”

The judge reminded Rumiantsev that the trial was focused on whether he had assaulted the woman, not on her behaviour.

The jury also found Rumiantsev guilty of perverting the course of justice after he wrote to the woman from prison following his arrest, asking her to withdraw her allegations.

Rumiantsev was found not guilty of rape and intentional strangulation relating to the January incident, and of a further count of rape and assault alleged to have taken place in November 2024.

Barron Trump was in the United States at the time of the incident. He grew up in the public eye as the youngest child of Donald and Melania Trump and has been linked by family members to efforts to engage younger voters during the 2024 US election campaign. Sentencing will take place at a later date.
